Aurora Police Foundation - Chief Metz and Naomi Colwell
Chief Metz and Executive Director Naomi Colwell came to talk with us about the Aurora Police Foundation. When the tragedy of the Theater shooting happened in 2012, the community came together to discover ways to work together for a safer community. The Aurora Police Foundation was created to help assist the Aurora Police Department and the community to find ways to create a safer community. Chief Metz was able to obtain some terrific seed money for the APD Foundation from Larry Mizel, Cherry Creek Schools, and the Anschutz Foundation. They are now setup as a 501C3 and are growing as illustrated with the addition of Naomi Colwell. Naomi has held leadership positions at The Aurora Chamber of Commerce and was the President/CEO of The Greater Brighton Chamber of Commerce before joining the Foundation. She brings an expertise of building collaboration across sectors to improve the well-being of the community, with a focus of reaching solutions to issues that affect our community. With a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Metropolitan State University of Denver, she has proven success in bringing community and business leaders together to help impact the lives of those living in the Aurora area. Naomi's husband is a police officer, she is a Paul Harris member, and was a Smoky Hill Rotarian. Naomi is thrilled to work at the Aurora Police Foundation, supporting the Aurora Police Department and the dedicated women and men working there. Members Skip Noe, Kevin Hougen, and Jim Bickford are on the board.
Still determining goals for 2020. Considerations are: A shooting simulator because anyone that is going through training needs this simulator as it tests their capacity under stressful situations and their response. APD wants to replace theirs because it does not work all the time. They would also like to use the money to train school resource officers. Sheridan has Safe to Tell and they reach out to the school counselor if the call involves a child to check to see how the child is doing. Lastly, they want to be at $200,000 in funds raised for 2020.
There is an Aurora Police Foundation Awards Dinner on Friday Sept 27th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. We were invited to come and buy a table. Anyone interested in attending please email Jim Bickford @ jim@abclawyers.com .
Thank you Chief Metz and Naomi for informing us on this foundation.
