Steve Ruger, Aurora City Clerk, was our speaker this week. What does a City Clerk do? Steve explained that their mission is a commitment to providing excellent customer service to our diverse community through communication, trust, professionalism, respect and accountability. The main functions of the Aurora City Clerk's office are:
Boards - The city of Aurora has 30 boards, commissions, committees and/or authorities composed of resident volunteers appointed by the Aurora City Council. You can click on the Boards and Commisions link above to learn more about vacancies or possible volunteer opportunities for a board.
City Council Support - Act as primarily a legislative support to the activities of city council.
Election Administration - The City Clerk's Office provides the forms required to run for municipal office, and works with citizens on the initiative and referendum process, whereby citizens can propose legislation and seek its approval by the voters. The clerk's office also coordinates with the county clerks and recorders to conduct municipal elections. To obtain a candidate handbook please click on the Elections Administration link to obtain.
Records Management - The Clerk's office facilitates all records requests and roughly 2000 such requests have occurred this year. To learn more about how to make a records request please click on link above.
Mail out ballots will begin on 10/14 for this year. They are looking for volunteers to help during the voting process. Steve also described his career and how he arrived in Aurora. It was obvious that he is very passionate about local government and wants all citizens to vote and become active in your local municipality.
Thanks Steve for your passion and willingness to share your story and the activities of the City Clerk's office.
