Ev Sequeira

Ev was born in Pune, India.   When  he was five he had a case of chicken pox just before being tested to go into first grade. The nuns [Sister Eugene] were threatening to detain him in kindergarten for another year.  A classmate of his who passed the exam and was promoted to first grade, caused Ev's Dad to pursue the matter further with the nuns of St Joseph's convent. As Ev recovered from the chicken pox, his mom home schooled him on the subjects he had missed, he was able to pass the special exam and promoted to first grade.  Ev's dad worked for the government of India
managing the inventory for a high explosives factory. This caused him to be transferred to remote areas of the country, so Ev and his 2 younger brothers were sent to a Jesuit boarding school in Bombay.  He spent 6 years there from middle to high school. The family was considered middle class in India which would be considered poor in the US, but didn't know it, because they never wanted for the basic necessities of life. His mom always saw to it that whatever they had was shared equally. There seemed to always be enough to go around.

Ev wanted to go to The Indian Institute of Technology, an elite university that took
only 1,000 students out of 33,000 thatapplied in 1970. Ev's Dad was earning a monthly salary of 1000 rupees, which at that time converted to $125. The tuition at the school was around $30 per month, which was a high percentage of his salary, but he allowed Ev to attend this university, with great sacrifice. He enrolled in the five year mining curricula and was accepted.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Technology (honors) degree.

In 1976, he took the GRE exam, and was able to score high enough to qualify for admission and was offered an assistantship at the Mackay School of Mines in Reno Nevada.  He graduated with a Master's degree in mining.  He later also obtained an MBA while working for the Mining companies.

While in school he overcame the fear of public speaking. While at school he met his wife Teresa. Upon graduation he went to work for Golder Associates, a consulting mining and Geotechnical firm. He learned the art of report writing and conducting feasibility studies for Uranium and oil shale open pit mines.

In 1982, he went to work for Cyprus Minerals Company, and helped startup a new Molybdenum mine near Challis Idaho. His expertise in mine planning at the firm became legend, so he was invited to evaluate all of Cyprus Minerals properties for cost efficiency, and to evaluate new acquisitions. With Cyprus, he was promoted to Chief Engineer of the Thompson Creek mine, then transferred to Bagdad Arizona to be the Technical Services Manager and Operations Superintendent for that Copper mine. He and the General Manager of the mine were laid off in 1994 when the new CEO of Cyprus wanted to bring in his own people to staff the middle management positions. Ev and his boss from the mine then opened a new business repairing Laser Printers and recycling laser and inkjet cartridges. They created a new Business that did about $40,000 in sales during the 9 months in operation.  Ev got a call from his former boss,Gary Crane from the Thompson Creek mine and was offered position of Chief Engineer for the KingKing copper/Gold project in Davao, Phillipines, belonging to Echo Bay mines based in Denver. They unfortunately shut down and Ev who always wanted to be an entrepreneur decided to work for Edward Jones. This stint with Edward Jones [now going on 20 years] is the highlight of his career, because of the great support provided by the company he built this business in Aurora, Colorado. The office employs two full time associates in addition to Ev.

His parents and Teresa were key influences in his life and taught him perseverance, patience and Optimism. Other key people who have influenced Ev include Kevin Kimma, a marine who helped Ev overcome the fear of public speaking, Bill Bishop, a blaster in the Union Carbide mine in Bishop California who taught him how to think for himself, Gary Crane his boss, friend and mentor in the mining industry and Professor Ramlu at the Indian Institute of Technology, who emphasized that despite the rigorous curriculum at the school, he would expand his learning greatly once out in the real world.

After speaking about his life and career, Ev showed some slides of he and family members visiting India in 2016 to attend the wedding of a relative. The customs and rituals performed prior to the wedding date back several centuries, the actual ceremony itself was very modern. The wedding was very expensive, but families in India tend to save up for the wedding of a daughter and spare no expense. It is critical to them that the daughter starts her life very well.
