The Nazca Lines of Peru

The Nazca lines and figures are spread over a 37 square mile area at the foot of the Andes near Lima, Peru. It isn't until the area is flown over or is viewed from the mountains that the figures and lines become intelligible.
Scientific researchers believe the lines and figures were created by native peoples between 300 B.C. and 630 A.D. Speculation as to the reason for the lines includes aliens, placating gods, and following underground aqueducts that have been built.
Anita showed a Discovery Channel clip of the aqueducts and people climbing through them cutting the moss out with machetes.
The area receives no precipitation at all. The water in the aqueducts are necessary for life in the area.

Author and poet Anita Jepson-Gilbert told the story of Maria Reiche, a German mathematician, that viewed the lines on a plane flight in 1940 and became enthralled with them. She made it her mission in life to protect the lines from tourist destruction. In 1974, Peru decreed them a protective region as well as historical, national monument.
Anita has written a book about the lines. She had communicated with Maria and written long poem to her. Anita visited the lines in 2003.
