2010 Census

Brad Pierce, Aurora City Councilman, introduced Margee Cannon, his wife and the 2010 Census Program.

Margee Cannon, Aurora City Coordinator for the 2010 Census, provided a Trends Fact Sheet that has many interesting facts about Aurora and the census in general:
History
City Government
Physical Features
Population
Housing
Economy
The agenda for Margee's presentation was 14 questions about the census. Census Day 2010 is April 1st.
It is estimated that Aurora's population is 314,326 and the US population is 307,972,664.
Margee made the point that an accurate census is important to receive federal funding that amounts to $8,750 per adult over 10 years.
-
The Census is asking that people take "10 minutes to answer 10 questions" that will be mailed between 3/15 and 3/17 and return it in the self-addressed stamped envelope.
-
Census workers have to return up to 6 times to account for every address in the US. It costs $3 billion in extra outlay when the census is not promptly mailed back.
It will be interesting to see how accurate the population estimates are.

Marci Sis reminded the club about Flower Power. Boxing of flowers at Colorado Convention Center is on Sunday evening 2/21, after party to be announced. Monday morning, 2/22, Paul Suss and Joe Little will deliver the flowers to Dayton Place and Cherry Creek Nursing Home. Volunteers have received their assignments.
In a sad and emotional moment, Marci announced that she will be resigning from the club to move to Northwest Kansas with her husband to be the 4th generation to operate the family farm. The good news is that she will be 11 miles from her home town in Nebraska. There is a chance she will still be a banker since her dad is president of the community bank there.

Ron Maclachlan shined the spot light on Kimberly Armitage who ran the Health Fair at Dakota Valley Elementary School. Kimberly was helped by Jim Rogers, Doug and Katie Anthony, and Patrick Lovett.
Kimberly is also our representative to Fox Hollow Elementary School. She arranged for a YMCA grant of $12,000 for year one and ultimately $100,000 to be used in Cherry Creek to fight childhood obesity. It is part of Cherry Creek's health and wellness program. Kimberly also thanked the club for helping her daughter, Danielle reach her goal selling Girl Scout cookies. Danielle and her troop donated the troop funds to charities instead of taking field trips or using it otherwise.

Patrick Lovett called the club's attention to Heart Health Month and gave tips on having a healthy heart.

Rick Richards, club treasurer and member of the Aurora Rotary Foundation, announced the awarding of a $12,000 grant to the Latin American Education Foundation for scholarships. This is done with a donation from Leo Bessera of $6,000 matched by the Aurora Rotary Foundation. Leo acts as sponsor for The Aurora Central Interact Club and does great work very quietly.

This is a collage put together by The Aurora Central Interact Club to highlight and counteract teen suicide. President Susan Perkins and Leo Bessera met with the Interact Club Tuesday 2/16 to help with the collage. It is to be used as a backdrop in our booth at the PETS (President Elect Training) conference 2/25-2/28.
