Safe Investing

Fred Joseph, Colorado Securities Commissioner since May, 1999 displays a brochure entitled "Essential Guide to Safe Investing" that was distributed to all members.
Commissioner Joseph is in charge of the Division of Securities whose misson is to protect investors and maintain public confidence in the securities marketplace while avoiding unreasonable burdens on participants in the capital markets.
His department is in charge of:
Licensing stock brokers
Registering securities
Investigating and prosecuting securities fraud
-
Commissioners remedies when issues arise are:
Administrative Decisions
Civil Prosecution
Criminal Prosecution
Commissioner Joseph illustrated recent actions taken against fraudulent individuals. Nearly all cases cited were a result of individuals being sucked in to offers that were too good to believe, e.g. a $59,000 investment that would provide a return of $6,000 a month in perpetuity.
Recent criminal prosecutions have resulted in prison sentences up to 338 years.
Efforts are made to recover whatever assets still exist. Recently, Merrill Lynch and other investment companies had to buy back $1.2 billion in auction rate securities that were nonredeemable.
Assets that are recovered are returned to victims with nothing withheld for prosecution costs.

Angie Wilsea, sponsor of Gateway Interact and Linda Witulski, Gateway Principal, explained the Empty Bowl fund raising project of the Gateway Interact Club. The bowls have been created and painted and are for sale for $10. The proceeds go to feed the hungry.

Barb Peck, Georges wife, visited from the Aurora Gateway Club to announce their fund raiser on February 20 from 2 to 4 PM. They are having a martial arts demonstration at the Excelsior Youth Center Gym. Brian and Brad Evans will demonstrate Taekwondo and Diana Payne will demonstrate Naginata, (defense with a bamboo pole). Cost $20.

Ida Asp, our Swedish exchange student updated the club on her activities. Two weeks ago, January 16-17, Ida went skiing at Copper Mountain with all the other exchange students in the district. Ida was on the Smoky Hill swim team and won her last meet participating in the 50 meter free style. Swimming has ended and she is looking forward to the start of tennis.
Ida is making plans for her parents summer visit and a southwest tour.

Dictionary Project
Thank you all so much for your help with the dictionary project. This is a reminder that if you have made your deliveries to the schools to send me an email to let me know that you have completed your assignment. My email address is dlemon@bsamail.org
Also there are apparently some of you who have not yet made your deliveries because there are still a lot of dictionaries at Joe Little's office. Please call first to set up an appointment to pick up your boxes 303-360-6955. This is not meant to call anyone out but just to remind you that these students need their dictionaries.
Thanks again for all of your help. David Lemon,
Chairman, Dictionary Project
