Of Special Interest

Jerry Kraus is at Johnson Center in hospice care.

Mary Ellen asks that there be no visitors or calls.

Jerry Kraus is the second District Governor from the Aurora Rotary Club.

Jerry won the Silver Medal and other medals during the Korean war by saving his lieutenant and others.  He was shot in the head doing this.  He is suffering from his wounds now.  His group won two Medals of Honor.  Think it over, it's not often you get to know a true hero.

Tom Nicholas

President-Elect Tom Nicholas conducted the meeting while President Susan Perkins attended to a family medical situation.

The State of Colorado's Waist Line

Kimberly Armitage

Kimberly Armitage, past president of the Aurora Rotary Club and

director of Aurora Family YMCA talked about the number of Colorado residents that are overweight and the health consequences.

Colorado falls below the rest of the country statistically for being obese, but Colorado obesity is increasing at the same rate as the rest of the country.  13% to 17% of the residents of Arapaho County are obese.  Obesity has a direct correlation with diabetes.  35 to 40% of all health care costs are related to being overweight.

*

Kimberly talked about the initiative for health and wellness that has been started in the Cherry Creek School District.  Cherry Creek has defined Wellness as:

The state of being healthy in body and mind especially as a

                             result of deliberate effort.

*

Our club, with Kimberly as the coordinator, is participating in a Rotary Wellness Pilot program at Dakota Valley Elementary.  Club members have participated in the Turkey Trot, counting laps that the students ran.

There is going to be a Family/Adult Summit on 4/17/2010 at Grandview High School.

Club members participated in a Youth/Adult Summit at Grandview High School two years ago.

Kimberly is to be commended for her dedication to health and wellness and being a great representative of our club in the pilot project.

Howard and John

Howard Hall collects a Christmas gratuity from John Paroske for the Double Tree wait staff.   As an innovation this year, the gratuity was collected two weeks in a row in an effort to give all club members a chance to contribute.

Susie wait staff

Head wait person Suzie, received the $700 gratuity that was collected.  She was very appreciative and effusively thanked the club.  The staff does a great job for the club all year.

Larry Pisciotta

President of the Aurora Rotary Foundation, Larry Pisciotta reported that the foundation is in great shape.  Click to view current Aurora Rotary Foundation officers and financial committee.

Barbara Rowe

Barbara Rowe announced that Shots for Tots begins in January, 2010.  The Aurora Rotary Club is responsible for manning Shots for Tots at Hoffman Heights Fire Station from January through June of 2010.  Click to view schedule and details of Shots for Tots.  Barbara circulated the sign up sheet.  Shots for Tots are held on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 9AM to 1PM.

Tom Nicholas

Rick Richard announced that there have been significant contributions to the RI Foundation with most contributors completing a Paul Harris Fellowship with the matching funds.  Anyone, wishing to take advantage of the tax deduction and matching funds this year need to get their contribution to Rick by December 20, so the committee will have time to complete the paperwork.

Gene Spanarella

Gene Spanarella announced that Gayna, the club bookkeeper, has discovered that some members are paying their dues but are missing the fees for guests they have brought.  He asks that you review your statement to see if this applies to you.  Members in arrears will be contacted.  The extra bookkeeping costs the club more now that we have a paid bookkeeper.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing

Subject: Salvation Army Bell Ringing Totals through Week 3

Fellow Rotarians and Bell Ringers,

Many of you were curious as to how we are doing in Bell Ringing in comparison to last year. Surprisingly

enough, we are $43.55 ahead of last year's totals. I have attached a spreadsheet below showing our income through week 3 for the past 4 years.

  2006 2007 2008 2009
SMOKEY HILL  $             1,482.73  $             1,791.02  $             1,899.00  $             1,983.57
PARKER ROAD  $                901.86  $             1,107.00  $             1,681.00  $             1,639.98
Total Through Week 3  $             2,384.59  $             2,898.02  $             3,580.00  $             3,623.55

As most of you know, the bulk of our income comes in during the next two weeks. We are

actually short a Saturday this year due to Thanksgiving being late in November. It would be

asking a lot of our "ringers" in the last two days of this year to make up that difference, but

we know they will do a fantastic job. We have some fantastic talent ringing down the stretch with Bob Barrows ringing 6 hours on Christmas Eve and George Peck "singing home" the final

2 hours of the season! This goes without saying that everyone has done a fantastic job and I

appreciate your willingness to battle the elements for such a wonderful organization.

I hope you all have a very safe and enjoyable holiday season!

Merry Christmas,

Howard
