How Technology is Changing the News Business

Harrison Cochrane

Harrison Cochran, publisher of the Aurora Sentinel and other local publications, told us about the trends in the newspaper business in terms of decreased readership and the failure of a number of major newspapers, such as the Rocky Mountain News, Chicago Sun Times, Detroit papers etc.

Harrison In Action

Harrison talked about the convergence of  three factors coming together to form a "perfect storm" causing the demise of major newspapers:

  1. Disruptive Innovation, eg.  The Internet, Cell Phones, Craigs List.
  2. Demographics:  eg.  People under 55 not having the habit of reading a news paper.
  3. Disconnect in the boardroom:  Primarily the disconnect between circulation numbers and revenue $.

Harrison's and other local publications are still profitable.  His analysis has targeted "trust" as the main reason local publications are surviving.

Readers perceive the major publications as choosing and presenting news from a point of view thereby losing the readers trust.
